As a young man Sakaly learnt photography at an established studio in Saint Louis, Senegal. Moving to Mali’s capital, Bamako, in 1956, he set up his own studio and began to specialize in photographing the social circles of military officers and the growing middle class. After Mali’s independence and with the subsequent growth of the bureaucratic class, his studio became very successful. Just before he died in 1988, Sakaly was named the first President of Groupement National des Photographes du Mali.
